Congratulations Are In Order May 30, 2008

A round of applause for Kim Culbertson, author of Songs for a Teenage Nomad (a.k.a. my thesis project), on her Thursday night win at the Ben Franklin Awards (held by The Independent Book Publishers Association)! Kim won the Best New Voice in Children’s/YA Fiction category.

Kim & Loretta Bodie & Peter

Kim and her lovely hubby Peter came down to LA for the award ceremony, and Bodie and I met them afterwards for a wee celebratory drink downtown. We’re already plotting to make the film based on her next book (and, oh yea, make the movie based on the first book…)

Congratulations Kim!

Ding Dong, the Dogs are Gone May 28, 2008

Some of you may recall that there were two yappy dogs that lived next door to me.  Very annoying, bark from sun-up to sundown, yappy dogs.

Well, I am happy to report that said yappy dogs have, courtesy of their owners, moved somewhere the hell else.  And I didn’t even have to have a bigger dog (i.e., Izzie or Titus) eat them.

It’s a win-win really.

La Dolce Vita, Kinda May 27, 2008

So, now that I’m back, some of you may be wondering what the heck I’ve been doing with myself.  Many, many important things is the answer.  Many.  Here is just a smattering:

  • Finishing the final draft of damn thesis, which was finally turned in 2 weeks ago (I passed!)
  • Prepping and filming the 3rd (and probably final) installment of How Do I Say This?, this time with Vanessa at the helm.  Post is just getting underway, so hopefully more on this soon.
  • Starting a new job right after spring break, working for the showrunner (an old friend) on Pushing Daisies.  An offer I definitely couldn’t say no to.

Nothing like multi-tasking my way to the finish line…

This does not include the multitude of many other earth-shattering activities that fill my time, like finally catching up on Lost (holy crap it’s getting good!), cleaning my bathroom, introducing the joys of Korean barbeque to Italian visitors, seeing Indiana Jones twice out of prior commitment not desire, and trying to catch up on 2 years worth of sleep.

Graduation is June 13.  Friday the 13th to be exact.  An auspicious beginning to the rest of my life, no?

My Long Absence, Part Deux May 26, 2008

Yes, yes, it is I, back from Blog purgatory. My apologies to you, my 3 fans, for the great lapse.

To get things going again, I thought I’d offer up this juicy bit of mass consumption:

Pot Pie

“The Walker Brothers” (a.k.a. Alonso, Jeffrey, and Aaron) held a fundraiser last week for their upcoming Avon 3-Day Walk for breast cancer (you can donate to the cause here), and what a fundraiser it was! Charity Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s, with celebrity caller Kevin Smith, and a slew of nifty prize packages that Alonso et al got donated. Cindy graciously agreed to accompany me, and we arrived early to snag a table and get a bite before the fun and games started. For some reason, I had to go and order the chicken pot pie. And, yes, everyone who walked by our table stopped and stared or laughed hysterically.

Anyway, the evening was a huge success even though Cindy and I had dud Bingo cards and almost-oh-so-close-just-two-more-spaces-damn-someone-else-called-bingo was the mantra of the night, but I’m not bitter. The boys raised a big ol’ chunk of change, and I managed to give away about a 1/3 of my pot pie to Dave, who took pity on me.
